Cub Scouts: Easy Whittling Projects

set up a workshop

For the Woodcarving merit badge, simple whittling projects are easy and inexpensive to complete. Name tags, badges and other items are great for whittling. Scouts may also opt to whittle badges with wood burning. Plaques, which are larger pieces of wood than a plaque, are great for whittling.

Superhero logos are straightforward

While there are many movies about superheroes, many logos you can carve are simple and easy. The bat is a great start, as is the diamond S on Superman's shield. Spiderman's web is an easy design. The Joker card, on the other hand, is very simple to carve. Once Cub Scouts have mastered the skill of cutting the logo, the finished product can be used to decorate mirrors or dressers.

The Shazam! The background of the Shazam! logo features a cloudy dark blue sky. This logo is composed of three-dimensional text, lighting and a background. It represents the comic story. The logos of superheroes are used to show their stories. However, the cub scout whittling project can also include brand names and businesses. Superheroes tend to be associated with comics, but superhero logos make it possible to connect the two worlds.

Morfmir whittled his chess set

A whittled chess set makes a great project for the cub scouts' Webelos Craftsman activity badge. The set includes instructions and a part list. It is simple to make a hardware chess kit, and kids will love playing the game when it is done.

A boy scout from New Hampshire designed this unique chessset. Chandler Francis took a metalworking merit badge and made the board and pieces at the blacksmithing pavilion. The "Sinquefield invention Lab," named after Dr. Jeanne Sinquefield's late wife, teaches Scouts to use new technologies and provides hands-on education. The project required the use a laser printer and a 3D printing machine.

Woodcarving ranks as one of the most popular Cub Scout elective medals. It is possible to earn it either as a cub and an older boy. This badge requires basic woodcarving skills, safety, and the use of tools. Scouts can complete the Woodcarving requirements in their councils, or through a special camp. Here are some tips on earning this badge:

To complete this badge, you will need a good knife. You can use a small, well-sharpened folder or pocket knife to complete this badge. While thumb guards made of ducttape are not required, they can prove to be very useful. A leather work glove reinforced with duct tape is another option. This will keep your hands safe while you use a knife. These items must be safely stored throughout the project.

How To

How to stain wood

The process of staining wood involves the application of chemicals to the wood's surface, which causes it to change its color. This chemical reaction causes wood to turn from whiteish to brownish. Oak is the most common wood type for staining. However, you can also use other wood types.

There are several ways to apply stains to wood surfaces. One method involves mixing the stain and a solvent and then spraying it on the wood. Another method involves applying a solution of water to the wood. The stain can be mixed with paints and varnishes to become part of the final coating.

The first step in staining wood is preparing the surface. Clean the wood to get rid of any grease, dirt or other substances that might be detrimental to the stain's application. Sanding smoothens scratches and rough spots. The next step is to choose the stain type you want. There are two basic kinds of stains: penetrating stains and non-penetrating stains. Penetrating stains penetrate deeper than non-penetrating stains, which makes them great for dark colors like mahogany. Non-penetrating oils work best when used with light colors, like maple.

Once you have decided on the stain type that you want, get your tools ready. You can use a paintbrush to apply stains. This allows you spread the liquid evenly over the surface. To remove any stains left behind after painting, you will need some rags. If you plan on mixing the stain yourself make sure that you have enough containers to hold the different components.

Once you have prepared your materials, start by cleaning the area where you plan to stain the wood. Use soap and warm water to remove dust and grime. Wipe the entire piece of furniture with a rag dampened with clean water. If you intend to stain darker wood, make sure you get rid of any debris.

Apply the stain. Start at one end of the piece of furniture and brush or spray the stain onto the wood. You should work slowly and carefully. Continue moving along the grain until you reach your opposite end. You must be careful not to allow the stain to drip off the wood's edges. Let the stain dry completely before proceeding with the next steps.

To protect the painted surface, apply a coat of clear polyurethane sealant. Apply three coats polyurethane sealer. Allow the third coat to dry overnight before sanding the final coat.
