Preparing the scrollsaw for fretwork

You might be intimidated by fretwork, especially if it's your first time. But, with the right tools and knowledge, fretwork is easy to learn. This type of work used to be done by handsaws. However, scroll saws make it much more simple. Scroll saws can have their blade removed so that you can cut different patterns out of wood sheets and panels.

First, prepare the scrollsaw. Drill starter holes. Starter holes are located at a quarter inch distance from the inside edge of the scroll saw. These holes are made using a 5mm bit drill. Once you have drilled your starter holes, you will be able to start cutting wood pieces.

Once you've ensured your scrollsaw's blade is sharp, you are ready to begin carving. Marquetry is a type of woodwork in which you attach different colored wood veneers to a wooden surface. Marquetry is considered an art form and requires a skilled woodworker. This type of woodworking should not intimidate beginners. You can still create stunning pieces for your office and home with a scrollsaw.

How To

How to join two pieces of wood together without nails

Woodworking is a hobby that many people enjoy doing. It is relaxing and enjoyable because you can create something useful with wood. There are times when two pieces of wood need to be joined together. This article will help you to maintain the beauty of your woodwork projects.

Before you can join the wood pieces together, you need to remove any rough edges. Avoid leaving sharp edges that could lead to problems later. Now you can start gluing the boards together.

When working with hardwood, glue should be applied only to one side. Use glue on both the sides for softwoods, such as cedar or pine. Apply the glue to the boards and press them down until they are securely attached. Make sure you let the glue dry before moving on to the next step.

After you have glued the boards together, drill holes in the joints where you intend to place screws. These holes will differ depending on the type and size of screw you are using. If you are going to use a half-inch wood screw, you will need to drill at least 3/4 inch deep.

After drilling your holes, drive the screws into the board's backside. Avoid hitting the board's top surface. Otherwise, you could ruin the finish. Avoid hitting the screws' ends too often when driving screws. This will help prevent splitting of the end grain.

Once your project is complete, it's time to protect it against the elements. You can either seal the entire piece of furniture or cover the top. It doesn't matter what method you use, you want something that will last many years. Examples include oil-based varnishes and polyurethanes, shellac, lacquer and others.

These products can generally be found in any home improvement shop. Just make sure that you buy the right kind for the job. Don't forget to keep in mind that some finishes are toxic. When handling certain finishes, wear protective gear.
