How to drive a nail through wood

It is essential to pick the right size and style of hammer before you can drive a nail in wood. There are many types of hammers that you will find: claw hammers and sledgehammers; mallets; ball peen hammers; and hatchets. Each type has its strengths and weaknesses. A clawhammer works best when hitting something hard like nails. However, it can sometimes be difficult to see exactly where the strike is going. A sledgehammer allows you to hit large areas simultaneously, but it is too heavy and cumbersome to use for small tasks.

Place your hand flat on the side of your chosen hammer so that the handle rests in your palm. You can grip the handle with your fingers, but not so tight that it causes injury. Hold the hammer straight up, keeping your wrist relaxed. Next, swing the hammer toward the ground and aim for the nail's center. You should feel the impact from the hammer striking a nail. Try practicing with a block to help you master the art of swinging a stick.

Once you are ready to drive the nail, place the hammer close to your body. Place the nail so that it is perpendicular with the wood's surface. Keep your eyes focused directly on the tip of the nail. Swing the hammer forward, then follow through with the motion of the hammerhead. You can repeat this several times, increasing your swing speed. Once you've mastered the technique, try adding power to your swings. You can hold the hammer over your shoulder and forcefully bring it down. This way, you'll be able to put more energy behind your blows.

Once you have successfully drilled the first hole in the nail, remove the hammer. To pull out the remaining nails, use a screwdriver or pry bar. Keep the nails heads in line with the surface of the board to prevent splitting the wood.
